      <title>The reference frame of the motion aftereffect is retinotopic</title>

      <description>&lt;a href='http://www.soeo.it/modules/wfdownloads/'>&lt;em>[da: Scarica Appunti e Tesine]&lt;/em>&lt;/a> Although eye-, head- and body-movements can produce large-scale translations of the visual input on the retina, perception is notable for its spatiotemporal continuity. The visual system might achieve this by the creation of a detailed map in world coordinatesa spatiotopic representation. We tested the coordinate system of the motion aftereffect by adapting observers to translational motion and then tested (1) at the same retinal and spatial location (full aftereffect condition), (2) at the same retinal location, but at a different spatial location (retinotopic condition), (3) at the same spatial, but at a different retinal location (spatiotopic condition), or (4) at a different spatial and retinal location (general transfer condition). We used large stimuli moving at high speed to maximize the likelihood of motion integration across space. In a second experiment, we added a contrast-decrement detection task to the motion stimulus to ensure attention was directed at the adapting location. Strong motion aftereffects were found when observers were tested in the full and retinotopic aftereffect conditions. We also found a smaller aftereffect at the spatiotopic location but it did not differ from that at the location that was neither spatiotopic nor retinotopic. This pattern of results did not change when attention was explicitly directed at the adapting stimulus. We conclude that motion adaptation took place at retinotopic levels of visual cortex and that no spatiotopic interaction of motion adaptation and test occurred across saccades.</description>

      <title>Optimal feature integration in visual search</title>

      <description>&lt;a href='http://www.soeo.it/modules/wfdownloads/'>&lt;em>[da: Scarica Appunti e Tesine]&lt;/em>&lt;/a> Despite embodying fundamentally different assumptions about attentional allocation, a wide range of popular models of attention include a max-of-outputs mechanism for selection. Within these models, attention is directed to the items with the most extreme-value along a perceptual dimension via, for example, a winner-take-all mechanism. From the detection theoretic approach, this MAX-observer can be optimal under specific situations, however in distracter heterogeneity manipulations or in natural visual scenes this is not always the case. We derive a Bayesian maximum a posteriori (MAP)-observer, which is optimal in both these situations. While it retains a form of the max-of-outputs mechanism, it is based on the maximum a posterior probability dimension, instead of a perceptual dimension. To test this model we investigated human visual search performance using a yes/no procedure while adding external orientation uncertainty to distracter elements. The results are much better fitted by the predictions of a MAP observer than a MAX observer. We conclude a max-like mechanism may well underlie the allocation of visual attention, but this is based upon a probability dimension, not a perceptual dimension.</description>

      <title>Color and shape interactions in the recognition of natural scenes by human and monkey observers</title>

      <description>&lt;a href='http://www.soeo.it/modules/wfdownloads/'>&lt;em>[da: Scarica Appunti e Tesine]&lt;/em>&lt;/a> Trichromatic color vision is a fundamental aspect of the visual system shared by humans and non-human primates. In human observers, color has been shown to facilitate object identification. However, little is known about the role that color plays in higher level vision of non-human primates. Here, we addressed this question and studied the interaction between luminance- and color-based structural information for the recognition of natural scenes. We present psychophysical data showing that both monkey and human observers equally profited from color when recognizing natural scenes, and they were equally impaired when scenes were manipulated using colored noise. This effect was most prominent for degraded image conditions. By using a specific procedure for stimulus degradation, we found that the improvement as well as the impairment in visual memory performance is due to contribution of image color independent of luminance-based object information. Our results demonstrate that humans as well as non-human primates exploit their sensory ability of color vision to achieve higher performance in visual recognition tasks especially when shape features are degraded.</description>

      <title>Asymmetric interference between the perception of shape and the perception of surface properties</title>

S. Cant &amp; M. A. Goodale, 2007). Moreover, we recently used Garner&#039;s speeded-classification task to show that varying the surface (material) properties of objects does not interfere with shape judgments and vice versa (J. S. Cant, M. E. Large, L. McCall, &amp; M. A. Goodale, 2008). In the present study, we looked at Garner interference when surface cues contributed to the perception of object shape and hypothesized that this would interfere with judgments about the width and the length of the objects. In contrast, we predicted that varying the width and the length of the objects would not interfere with surface-property judgments. This is precisely what we found. These results suggest that the shape and the surface properties of an object cannot be processed independently when both these sets of cues are linked to the perception of the object&#039;s overall shape. These observations, together with our previous findings, suggest that the surface cues that contribute to object shape are processed quite separately from the surface cues that are linked to an object&#039;s material properties.</description>

      <title>Is the early modulation of brain activity by fearful facial expressions primarily mediated by coarse</title>

Several Event Related brain Potential (ERP) have indicated that emotional expressions already influence brain activity as early as 100 ms. Some studies hypothesized that this early brain response to fear depends on coarse-magnocellular inputs, which are primarily driven by Low Spatial Frequency (LSF) cues. Until now however, evidence is inconclusive probably due to the divergent methods used to match luminance and contrast across spatial frequencies and emotional stimuli. In the present study, we measured ERPs to LSF and HSF faces with fearful or neutral expressions when contrast and luminance was matched across SF or not. Our findings clearly show that fearful facial expressions increases the amplitude of P1 (only for contrastluminance equated images) and N170 in comparison to neutral faces but only in LSF faces, irrespective of contrast or luminance equalization, further suggesting that LSF information plays a crucial role in the early brain responses to fear. Furthermore, we found that, irrespective of luminance or contrast equalization, N170 occurred faster when perceiving LSF faces than HSF faces, again emphasizing the primacy of LSF processing in early face perception.</description>

      <title>Aging alters surround modulation of perceived contrast</title>

Perhaps counter-intuitively, a recent study revealed that older people actually require less time to discriminate the direction of motion of large, high contrast moving stimuli than young adults (L. R. Betts, C. P. Taylor, A. B. Sekuler, &amp; P. J. Bennett, 2005). L. R. Betts et al. (2005) proposed their finding as evidence for a reduction of cortical inhibitory function within the aging visual system. There is some neurophysiological support for this suggestion, as broadening of visual cortical neural tuning consistent with reduced inhibitory function has been observed in older animals. Here we explore the perceptual consequences of center-surround suppression within the healthy aging human visual system and report data from a center-surround contrast discrimination task (the Chubb contrast illusion). We predicted that older observers would demonstrate less center-surround suppression than younger subjects (consistent with reduced inhibition). Our data does not support this prediction as perceived contrast was altered more by surround modulation in the older than younger group (t(33) = 2.53, p = 0.02). A possible explanation for our findings is a decrease in perceptual brightness induction in the elderly group. Brightness induction relies on neural synchronization which might be disrupted by aging.</description>

      <title>Motion streaks in fast motion rivalry cause orientation-selective suppression</title>

Suppression depth was quantified by expressing monocular probe thresholds during dominance relative to thresholds during suppression. Rivalry between two fast motions or two slow motions was compared in order to test the suggestion that fast-moving objects leave oriented motion streaks due to temporal integration (W. S. Geisler, 1999). If fast motions do produce motion streaks, then fast motion rivalry might also entail rivalry between the orthogonal streak orientations. We tested this using a static oriented probe that was aligned either parallel to the motion trajectory (hence collinear with the streaks) or was orthogonal to the trajectory, predicting that rivalry suppression would be greater for parallel probes, and only for rivalry between fast motions. Results confirmed that suppression depth did depend on probe orientation for fast motion but not for slow motion. Further experiments showed that threshold elevations for the oriented probe during suppression exhibited clear orientation tuning. However, orientation-tuned elevations were also present during dominance, suggesting within-channel masking as the basis of the extra-deep suppression. In sum, the presence of orientation-dependent suppression in fast motion rivalry is consistent with the motion streaks hypothesis.</description>

      <title>Low-level mechanisms may contribute to paradoxical motion percepts</title>

      <description>&lt;a href='http://www.soeo.it/modules/wfdownloads/'>&lt;em>[da: Scarica Appunti e Tesine]&lt;/em>&lt;/a> A recent series of experiments demonstrated a surprising deterioration of visual motion discrimination with increasing stimulus size for stimuli of high contrast. This counterintuitive finding was explained as a result of surround suppression in visual area V5. Equally paradoxical was the finding that older observers showed better performance than younger observers. This second result was explained as an age-related reduction in surround suppression due to changes in GABA-mediated inhibition. Using an opponent motion stimulus, we find an analogous effect and also find that this effect is much reduced in older observers, to the point where they perform better than younger observers. Our long duration stimulus should be beyond the range at which surround-suppressed neurons in V5 are preferentially activated. Having normalized our stimuli relative to contrast threshold, we show that our results can be entirely explained by the relative contrast of the stimulus and speculate that contrast sensitivity may play a role in previously reported results. Our older observers&#039; data similarly can be explained by the relative contrast of the stimulus. The difference between older and younger observers appears to be a result of a weakening of spatial summation at high contrast in younger observers, perhaps caused by earlier saturation of motion mechanisms.</description>

      <title>Characterizing global and local mechanisms in biological motion perception</title>

Here, we present an experiment aimed to characterize these two mechanisms psychophysically. Naive observers were tested on one of two tasks. In a walker detection task designed to address global processing, observers were asked to discriminate coherent from scrambled walkers presented in separate intervals. In an alternate direction discrimination task designed to address primarily local processing, observers were asked to discriminate walking direction from both coherent and spatially scrambled displays. In both tasks, we investigated performance-specificity to human (versus non-human) motion and the effects of mask density and learning on task performance. Performance in the walker detection task was best for the human walker, was susceptible to learning, and was heavily hindered by increasing mask densities. In contrast, performance on the direction discrimination task, in particular for the scrambled walkers, was unaffected by walker type, did not show a learning trend, and was relatively robust to masking noise. These findings suggest that the visual system processes global and local information contained in biological motion via distinct neural mechanisms that have very different properties.</description>

      <title>Center-surround patterns emerge as optimal predictors for human saccade targets</title>

Nonetheless much of a visual scene is perceived after only a few saccadic eye movements, suggesting an effective strategy for selecting saccade targets. It has been known for some time that local image structure at saccade targets influences the selection process. However, the question of what the most relevant visual features are is still under debate. Here we show that center-surround patterns emerge as the optimal solution for predicting saccade targets from their local image structure. The resulting model, a one-layer feed-forward network, is surprisingly simple compared to previously suggested models which assume much more complex computations such as multi-scale processing and multiple feature channels. Nevertheless, our model is equally predictive. Furthermore, our findings are consistent with neurophysiological hardware in the superior colliculus. Bottom-up visual saliency may thus not be computed cortically as has been thought previously.</description>
